Club Twinning Explained

From the desk of Reg Walker 201N5 Region 3 Chairman

9th May 2007

First I need to tell you that, for the purposes of "Give Back", the ‘twinning’ of clubs is not a formal twinning in the way it is described by Lions international. Under LCI guidelines clubs twin with other clubs internationally. There is no facility for twinning within the one country.  We have therefore borrowed the term twinning and intend that the concept is to develop and foster friendships and associations between the country and city clubs across Australia.

In this regard it is not dissimilar to the Sister City concept adopted by a number of local Councils. Certainly I know that my local council, Hurstville, has a Sister City arrangement with Tamworth Council. The idea is not new to Lions either. It was apparently used informally between clubs some years back, but it came to light again during discussions about the Give Back to the Country Appeal currently being championed in District 201N5.

What we would like to do at Lugarno Lions is to form an arrangement with Bourke Lions that we hope will bring a number of benefits to both clubs, particularly during times like now when our mates in the country are doing it pretty tough. These benefits can loosely be described as:

  • letting the country clubs know that someone outside their area actually cares about them

  • becoming the ‘voice’ of the country club in the city and allowing direct and easy access to things like the Give Back Appeal Committee

  • assist the country club in areas of need – through and with the assistance of the Give Back Appeal Committee

  • we could have visits to each other’s clubs which might include hosting country Lions when they come to the Smoke, and vice versa (having family in the bush I know only too well that even in drought there are some great weekends away to be had in the country)

  • assist the Give Back Appeal Committee in identifying the areas in greatest need. The country clubs are perhaps more likely to tell their twinning club about people and areas of need once they have developed a relationship and had some dialogue with them.

  • finally, as Lions we want to help others, and here is a great opportunity to help our own – Aussies in need. In reality they may not need financial help, but the emotional support and the knowledge that someone has an interest in their wellbeing can be very valuable.

Kevin Coad from the Kellyville Lions Club is the Chairman of the Give Back Appeal Committee.  He is planning to meet with the Department Primary Industries to see what can be done about the bureaucratic forms that seem to be hog tying Government Funds.

Things are already happening. There is a lot of information on the 201N5 website (check out http://www.lionsclubssydney.org.au ), such as Drive Against the Drought, an event being run on 2nd June. This will go from Baulkham Hills to Cootamundra. We are involving the Lions Clubs from Bowral, Crookwell, Yass, Cootamundra and others as well as the Hills Clubs in running the event. The money raised during that particular event will go to the Cootamunda area.

MEDIA RELEASE

Lions Launch Give Back to the County Appeal for NSW Drought

From an idea born in the Lions NSW Parliamentary Club, nurtured by DG Peter Mendl and embraced by the Lions Clubs of Sydney & Districts a major appeal has been initiated by Sydney’s 78 Lions Clubs to raise and distribute much needed funds to  NSW’s most drought devastated areas.

“Donations to the appeal can be made in any branch of the Westpac Bank, and in Lions Community Chests in selected Sydney shopping centres,” Peter Mendl the District Governor for Lions in Sydney said.

“Lions Clubs from around the state will also commence raising funds for the “Give Back” Project from December to touch the lives of 60,000 farming families and 8,000 rural businesses and their families.” Mr Mendl said.

“Every single dollar goes to rural Lions Clubs working to alleviate the drought.”

Lions have met with Andrew Stoner, Leader of the NSW National Party, and the Labor Member for Bathurst, Gerard Martin, in relation to implementing the Lions Give Back to the Country Project.

Sydney Lions Clubs are meeting with the dozens of country Lion Clubs to obtain information as to the precise needs of the families in regions most affected.

“This is not just a Christmas appeal, this is a long term project to provide much needed support to the farmers and the Country towns who have provided the city for so long.” Mr Mendl said.

“The aim is that once this project is successful in NSW it will be carried out in other states through the local Lions Clubs,” Mr Mendl said.

“Lions Clubs are perfectly suited to working to alleviate the problems associated with the drought because we already have the local structures and networks in place in almost every town in NSW,” Mr Mendl said.

“Farmers are a proud lot who don’t want a hand out but a hand up. Respected local Lions Clubs will join together and give these farmers, families, and businesses in the bush a hand up,” Mr Stoner said.

Sydney Lions are planning to respond to calls for assistance with both emergency aid and longer term support.
